2013-2014 Calendar of Author Talks

  • September 28th, 11 am: A Fine, Fine Line - Researching and Writing Creative Nonfiction, Tanya Lee Stone - This talk brings together research skills with writing skills to explain how authors craft stories while sticking strictly to the facts.
  • October 26th, 11 am: How To Get the Most Out of Author Visits with Jon and Pamela Voelkel, authors of the Jaguar Stones - An interactive workshop to help teachers ensure that author classroom visits are both engaging to students and connect to core standards and their curriculum objectives.
  • November 2nd, 11 am: Agricultural Literacy in the Classroom with Abbie Nelson of NOFA-VT and author Gail Gibbons - Agriculture can be a great way to explore history, science, culture, even math! This workshop discusses how VT teachers are using agriculture in elementary schools, in line with Common Core standards.
  • January 18th, 11 am: Boys and Books with Duncan McDougall of Children's Literacy Foundation and Dan Greene, U-32 High School Librarian - A discussion of how to engage boys who are reluctant readers in trying more books, and expanding the range and complexity of their reading.
  • March 8th, 11 am: Writing Workshop with authors Kate Messner and Jo Knowles - Participants should be prepared to do their own writing (bring a notebook or a laptop!) in this workshop that will be full of ideas for both the classroom and teachers’ own writing interests. Teachers, librarians, and parents all welcome - please RSVP to helen.labun.jordan@gmail.com so that we have a sense of how many people are attending.
  • March 22nd NOTE DATE CHANGE, 11 am: Grace Greene of the Vermont Dept. of Libraries presents the 2014-2015 Dorothy Canfield Fisher List - An overview of the newly announced DCF list and resources for building activities around these books. 
  • April 12th, 11am - Fairy Tales with Meg Allison Fairy tales continue to enchant us across cultures and through generations - and re-tellings of ancient magical tales capture new audiences every year. Meg has been creative with weaving fairy tales into the classroom and school library, including taking inspiration from her 2013 Global Teacher Fellowship trip to France and Italy. Come learn more April 12th!
